Mariah was the daughter of Elijah Houghton and Mercy Whitney of Harvard, Mass. She was married first in Harvard on 27 December 1791 to John Goldsmith, the son of Richard Goldsmith and Sarah Dix of Littleton and Harvard, Mass. Her husband was "killed by a stick of timber" when 28 years old, after which she was remarried to John Conant as his second wife. She had four children with her first husband and two more with her second husband.
