Auburn Summer Student Drowned
Loachapoka, Ala., July 30 - Watt Howle, 25, student at Auburn summer school, was drowned in Loachapoka Creek, about two miles from here Sunday afternoon, after he had rescued a girl companion, who had fallen into the stream. His body was recovered about an hour and a half later.
Howle, reported to be a good swimmer, had jumped into the creek to save Miss Mary Frances McCosh, of Roanoke, who had slipped from the bank. He carried her ashore and then disappeared under the water, according to reports. Miss McCosh, it was reported, could not swim.
The young man, accompanied by Miss McCosh, Kirby Paul, of Birmingham; Miss Elsie Beddingfield, of Rogersville, and a young man popularly known as "Goofy" Williams, all students at Auburn summer school, had gone to the creek on a party when the tragedy occurred about 4:30 o'clock.
Paul and Williams dived several times in an effort to locate Howle and pull him to shore, but their efforts were in vain. His body was finally located near the spot where he was seen to disappear.
Howle was a junior in the electrical engineering class at Auburn and was a very popular student. He was a member of Tau Omega Chi fraternity.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Annie Watt Howle, of Nashville, Tenn., and an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Moon, of Goodwater. Mrs. Howle is spending the summer with relatives in Goodwater.
