Dr. Cornelius Luce, physician and cordwainer, was born to Hezekiah and Thankful (Look) Luce. He married twice: Olive Foster in Tisbury in 1780 and Sophia Smead (widow of Anson Green) in 1796 in Ashfield, Massachusetts. He died leaving 13 children, 8 from his second wife, all 1-16 years old (sic; he actually left 14 plus a step-daughter). He was a physician in practice in Ashfield about 1810 for a few years and lived about half a mile north of the "Plain". Cornelius was grandfather to Rear Admiral Stephen Bleecker Luce, founder of the Naval War College and who married Eliza Henley, a grandniece of Martha Washington.
Cornelius was also grandfather to Margaret Bleecker Luce, wife of Rear Admiral Andrew Harwood, a great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin.
Cornelius was father to Dr. Vinal Luce, clerk in the US Pension office and Passionate about Indian Relations and Indian Affairs and involved in this and other governmental acts and appointments in our new nation.
