John R. Smith, 75, of West Mound Street, died early Sunday morning at Arlington Nursing Center in Newark.
Born in the Broadwell area, he was the son of the late Delbert D. and Lillian Vanwey Smith. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater. He formerly worked in Athens County area, coal mines and for Buckeye Steel Castings of Columbus.
He is survived by two daughters, Nine White of Columbus and Myrna Bear of Delaware, Ohio; a son, Gary R. of Thornville; a sister, Blanche Preist of Broadwell; a special friend, Maxine Smith of Columbus; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Frederick Jack and David Delbert; and four brothers, George, Harry, Edward and Newton.
Services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens, with the Rev. Richard Hudson officiating. Burial will be in Sand Rock Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Military rites will be conducted a the cemetery.
Omission: Dated 17, 1986
In addition to those listed Monday, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a brother, Albert and a sister, Bertha Smith.
