Martin Malley Succumbs at Daughter's Home

95-Year-old Pioneer Resident Buried Saturday Morning at Wykoff.

This county lost one of its oldest pioneer citizens last Thursday in the death of Martin Malley, age 96, who passed away at 10 a.m. that day at the home of his son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. John Mulhern, residing east of Wykoff, with whom he had made his home the past 15 years. He had been ill for three weeks.

The son of Martin and Mary Malley, he was born in Mayo county, Ireland, in November, 1845. and came to this country at the age of 17. His father died in Ireland leaving him, the oldest, to care for a large family, which he undertook to do. After coming to this country he settled in St. Louis, Mo., working at different trades to secure passage for the rest of the family.

He came to Minnesota, working at the brick making trade, and married Margaret Guaghan on Dec 12, 1881. To this union six children were born, one dying at the age of 11 years. He located on the farm where his son John now resides, remaining there until ten years ago, when he went to make his home with his daughter Mrs. John (Rose) Mulhern.

Mr. Malley remained alert of mind and greatly enjoyed the visits paid him by old friends about the county. Despite his advanced years, he was very active physically and would walk miles to go fishing, a sport which he thoroughly enjoyed and indulged in a few weeks before he was stricken. He also enjoyed the radio and would spend hours listening to a ball game or the latest sport news.

He was preceded in death in 1918 by his wife. Besides his daughter Mrs. Mulhern, he is survived by one other daughter Mrs. Fred Ross of Rochester, three sons, Thomas of Fountain, John of Wykoff and Mike of Austin; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Davern and Mrs. Thomas Flaherty of St. Paul; twenty-one grandchildren and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock from the Catholic church at Wykoff with Fr. F. T. English officiating. He was laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. Six of his grandsons were pallbearers; Lyman, Walter and Billy Mulhern and Clayton, Kenneth and Jackie Malley.

Those attending the services from a distance were; Mrs.Thomas Flaherty, Mrs. Kathryn Flaherty, Mr. and Mrs John Flaherty, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kolowski, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Coneker and son, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Boland, Mrs Joe Davern, Mrs. Bill Gallaghan all of St. Paul, John and Thomas Malley of Owatonna, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Gillespie and Rev. Fr. Jansen and his mother of Rochester, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Schroeder, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Norby and family and John Egan of Spring Valley, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ross of Austin and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Albrecht of La Crescent.

Martin and Margaret Malley sometimes spelled their last name as Malia.
