Civil War Union Army Officer. Major of the 118th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and Congressman from Indiana. He moved to Clinton County, Indiana and attended the common schools of the county, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1856 and commenced practice in Eaton, Preble County, Ohio. He enlisted in the Civil War and served in the Union Army as lieutenant, captain, and major. He was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1875, and was not a candidate for renomination in 1874. He was also a judge of the Twenty-eighth judicial circuit court of Indiana 1875 to 1900. He was the cousin of Milton Sayler, a Congressman from Ohio.
