He was mustered in as a Private in Company D, 9th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 23, 1861 (his last name is listed as "Truax" by New Jersey Adjutant General records). He re-enlisted on January 18, 1864, and served through the conclusion of the conflict, being mustered out on July 12, 1865 after nearly four years of service in the field.
