Charles was the son of Henry Detchen and Cynthia Ann Goss. On 05 Feb 1903 he married Mary Whittingham and they had four children: Joseph, Loretta, Lillian and Louise. Early in life Charles was a ball player but by the turn of the century he was working in a plow factory. Later in life he worked as a watchman in retail stores. Mary died of nephritis in 1918 at the age of 47 and Charles never remarried. He died of hypostatic pneumonia at the age of 75.
