Theodore R. Hull passed away quietly at his home in Northeast Bakersfield in the early afternoon of July 3, 2013. Born in Santa Monica, California on December 29, 1921, he grew up in the Los Angeles area, attending Venice High School and graduating from Santa Monica City College in 1941. While employed at Douglas Aircraft Manufacturing in the early days of WWII, he answered his country's call to duty and joined the U.S. Navy, receiving stepped up rank upon enlistment due to experience gained in Sea Scouts as a young man.
After serving briefly at the Naval Landing Force Equipment Depot in San Diego, he was accepted into the V-12 officer training program, studying at Occidental College and later receiving midshipman training at Northwestern University in Chicago. While attending the Midshipmen's Ball, he met Modesta Hawkins, a Chicago native, and began a relationship that would last 68 years. Upon commissioning as a Navy ensign, he served on minesweepers in the Pacific, participating in the Russian lend-lease program and minesweeping operations in Japan.
After the war ended, Ted and Des were married and started their life together in California, where in 1950 Ted received a degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Southern California. Ted was employed as a production engineer with Standard Oil of California (Chevron USA), his career of 34 years took he and his family to assignments in Utah, Colorado and California, receiving a final transfer to Bakersfield in 1969.
In Bakersfield, Ted and Des made several friendships that endure to this day. Their Round Robin bridge group is especially close, having shared endless good times and laughs around the card table on Saturday nights and at many other events. Several members took vacations together throughout the world. His family enjoyed several car trips across the country and memorable shipboard cruises in the later years. A talented craftsman, he regularly built projects around the house that were an expression of his love for his family.
Theodore is survived by his wife of 66 years, Modesta; and two children: daughter, Mary Carroll of San Diego; and son, James of Bakersfield. He is remembered as a devoted husband and father, talented engineer and a member of this nation's greatest generation.
Theodore will be cremated and buried with military honors at the Bakersfield National Cemetery on a date tentatively planned for early fall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.
