He was a shoemaker. They moved to Toby, Armstrong (now Madison, Clarion), Pennsylvania in 1827, to join her brother (Reverend) Henry Koch, who had in 1819 become the first pastor of Reformed Churches of Clarion and adjoining counties. John bought land in Madison, Clarion, Pennsylvania on 01 April 1847. In 1862, he was one of the founders of the cemetery association that purchased and laid out a new general cemetery for the borough of Rimersburg.
