Headstone shows last name as Hurlbert. Most of us know, this last name is found spelled a myriad of ways. Hurlbut is his original surname.


Married three times.


Josiah Hurlbut (Hurlburt in military records) served as a private in 1775, in Capt. Benjamin Wood's Co., of Salem, Mass., Col. Thacher's Regt. of the Mass. Line (Militia)for 16 months 1775-1777. Was on seacoast defense for 10 months at Salem and Boston and also helped to build fort on Noodles' Island. In 1782 he enlisted in the Vermont Militia raised for the defense of the frontiers of the State under Capt. Beriah Green for 5 months.

Remarks: Josiah Hurlburt and his wife are buried in the Pierce Cemetery in the town of Wilna, Jeff. Co. It is stated on Hannah Hurlbut's headstone that she was 115 years old, had had four husbands and twenty children. It is said in the family that she made bullets for the soldiers serving in the war.


Note: The 1840 Census of Pensioners, published Washington, D.C., 1841,lists Josiah Hurlburt, age 79 yrs., Town or Wilna, Jefferson Co., N.Y.
