A funeral service for James Alford, age 89, of Sulphur Springs will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Spence Chapel, First Baptist Church, with Rev. Mark Bryant officiating. A military graveside service, under the direction of the Hopkins County Military Coalition, will follow at New Pickton Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Sloan, Harrison Hoffman, Scott Hoffman, Steve Dixey, Mike O'Dell and Jimmy O'Dell. Honorary pallbearers will be the Joy Class at First Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 19, 2013 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. James Alford passed away Tuesday evening, July 16, 2013 at Carriage House Manor Cottages. He was born on May 1, 1924 in Pickton, the son of Sid Alford and Valeria (Clay) Alford. He married Evorine O'Dell at Pickton on May 31, 1947; she survives. He was a retired teacher, coach and business manager for Dallas Independent School District and a member of First Baptist Church. He was active in the volunteer Christian builders and he served in the United States army Air Corp during World War II. Other survivors include: daughter, Nancy Dixey and husband Scott of The Colony; grandchildren, Holly Hoffman and husband Steve and Jason Sloan and great-great-grandchildren, Haley Hoffman, Harrison Hoffman and Presley Sloan. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, two sisters and one infant sibling. Memorials may be made to Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas and/or the American Heart Association.
