Born July 29, 1932, in Tishomingo, Marvin grew up on Pennington Creek in Tishomingo with his 10 brothers and sisters and a cousin, Gordon Hamilton. He graduated from Tishomingo High School. After serving as a U.S. Navy radioman in Hawaii, he completed a bachelor's degree at Southeastern State College in Durant. After graduation, he began his long, passionate career as a coach of basketball, track and football, both women's and men's teams, in Oakland; Terrell; Pierce, Idaho; Gate; Davenport; Randlett; Healdton; Cache; Tishomingo; and Lone Grove. His first teaching position was in Baker, Mont., in a one-room schoolhouse. He was an award-winning teacher of history and civics.
