After his father's death in 1815, the children remained with their mother who later remarried to widower Daniel Brown. All of the Watkins children married in Loudoun Co, VA but ca 1835-36 all had moved to Knox Co, OH, along with many of their Loudoun County neighbors.

Bernard married Charlotte Littleton on Sept 4, 1834 in Loudoun Co., VA. They had 8 children, all but one born in Knox Co, OH near Fredericktown. In the fall of 1850, Bernard moved his family to Monmouth, Warren Co, IL where their youngest child was born. Once their children reached adulthood, they began moving away, first to Red Oak, Montgomery Co, IA and some into Nebraska. Bernard and Charlotte followed several to Red Oak ca 1870. Both remained there until their deaths. They are buried in the Red Oak Evergreen cemetery but Charlotte's headstone could not be found.
