Thornton Rogers was born in the state of Virginia, and came overland to Henry County, Indiana, when just a youth, with the intention of farming in the "new country", a task worthy of his fibre. Not only did he work in the interests of agriculture, but also served his brethren as a minister of the gospel, preaching in the Christian Church of his community. He lived to reach the age of seventy-four years.
Thornton's death was the result of injury and not any bodily weakness. Thornton was the son of Aaron Grigsby and Elizabeth Baumgarner Rogers. His first wife was Sarah Massey (b. Jan. 10, 1833 in Henry Co., IN) and four children were born to this union: John (Nancy Rinard), James (Catherine E. Bales), Malinda (William Niccum) and Elizabeth. Thornton's second wife was Elizabeth Luellen, the daughter of David and Abigail Jones Luellen, they had eight children: David L. (Mary H. Richardson), Aaron G. (Mary E. Carter), Abigail (S. G. Hays), French, Mary (Amos Leeka), Amelia Jane (Christian Richardson), Benjamin, and Priscilla Sarah (George Hodson).
