Griggs was born 29 Sep 1837 to Alexander and Sallie Hampton Dixon in Grsyson County VA. He grew up on the family farm located along the banks of the New River in modern day Carroll County down river from Bartlett Falls (current day Fries).

Griggs was a farm laborer and blacksmith.

When war broke out between the states, Griggs enlisted into the Confederate States Army on 25 Jul 1861 in which he was granted rank of Corporal and assigned to Company C 29th Virginia Infantry. After serving approximately a year and a half, Griggs was appointed Sergeant on 12 Feb 1863.

Sgt. Griggs Dixon was killed in battle near Drewry's Bluff VA on 16 May 1864.
