Mary Jane Macklin was the daughter of James and Margaret Thompson Macklin, all born in Ireland. Mary Jane stayed behind in Ireland with her mother's relatives when her parents and younger sister, Margaret, immigrated to Washington County, New York. (Between 1836-1838) Her mother Margaret subsequently died in 1839 or 1840 in NY. Her father James, returned to Ireland and married Eliza McKane, with whom he had nine additional children.

There is a story from the Macklin family history in Washington County, that Mary Jane Macklin came to New York from Ireland in 1850. When she asked to see her mother's grave, her father could not remember the location. Mary Jane and her sisters (Margaret, Sarah, Eliza) were much displeased with this callousness and they and their families had little to do with James thereafter.

On February 2, 1854, Mary Jane Macklin married Robert P. McClarty in Hebron, Washington County, New York. They had 11 children:
David J McClarty 1854 – 1900
Mary McClarty b. 1856
Martha J McClarty Robinson 1858 – 1929
Margaret McClarty Sherman 1860 – 1910
Elizabeth Lizzie McClarty 1862 – 1903
Robert J McClarty 1863 – 1926
William M McClarty 1865 – 1950
Mark F McClarty 1869 – 1946
Daniel McClarty b. 1870
Samuel McClarty 1873 – 1958
Bertha McClarty Coulter 1879 – 1971

Tragically Mary Jane and Robert McClarty were killed by a Delaware & Hudson train enroute to attend their fifty-second wedding anniversary reception in Jackson, NY in 1906.
