Fred was born in Sheboygan, moving with his family to Grand Rapids later on in his childhood, and graduating from Ottawa Hills High in 1944. He was a World War II veteran in the US Navy, serving 16 ½ months overseas in all three theaters of the war. He started and maintained his own janitorial supply company for 40 years, retiring in 1992.

He was married to Beverly (Poland) McDonald for 25 years, having two children, but later divorcing. He later gained a loving companion, Carolyn Booth, who preceded him in death. He also became close with much of her family.

Fred lived in Naples, Florida for several years before moving back to Michigan to be with his children and granddaughters months before passing on from his battle with cancer.

Fred was notorious for his love of humor, possessing a talent for comical sketches, and deep appreciation for the Three Stooges. He also enjoyed music from the likes of Sinatra, and had a great sweet tooth, despite his thin frame.
He is greatly missed.
