Priscilla "Jayne" Alter, 86, passed away peacefully March 20, 2011, at the Memory Care Center in Gilbert, AZ.

She was born on November 13, 1924, in the east Toledo neighborhood of Birmingham to Pearl and Joseph Simon. She spent her girlhood on a farm in East Toledo, graduating from Clay High School and leaving home to attend Ohio University in Athens.

When she returned to the Toledo area, she worked at Lamson's and Max Davis Jewelers.

She married Dr. Albert Alter, a Toledo ophthalmologist, who preceded her in death in 1991.

In 1975, the Alters relocated from Ottawa Hills to Green Valley, AZ, where Albert began a new practice. They became devoted supporters of the U of A Wildcats, purchasing season tickets to football, basketball and baseball games. Jayne began perfecting her "tailgating" foods, with her fried chicken emerging as the winner.

Jayne's far-ranging interests included cooking, fashion, art, golf and volunteer work. After marrying Albert, she pursued them all. She perfected her lifelong love of cooking, frequently entertaining friends in their Ottawa Hills home. An admirer of Julia Child, she never missed the TV show hosted by the famous chef, often taping programs so she could review them later. However, the recipes most cherished by friends and family were her own Hungarian pastries and Dobos Torte. An accomplished painter, Jayne was a student of the artist Line Bloom Draper. She also found time for needlepoint and knitting.

She volunteered for the Toledo Symphony and was chairman of the Aesculapian Ball. An avid golfer, she won the 9-hole championship at Inverness Country Club.

She became fascinated with authentic Mexican cuisine and enrolled in cooking classes while she studied Spanish.
