Anthony J Schaefer, 74, well known resident of Riverhead, dropped dead in his home, 545 Sweezy Avenue, on Tuesday afternoon. Mr Schaefer was stricken that morning while attending to his duties as sexton of the First Congregational Church. He recovered sufficiently however to drive his car home. Mr Schaefer, who had been a highly respected resident of Riverhead for the greater part of his life was a carpenter by trade and was engaged in that occupation for many years. He was a member of the Riverhead Exempt Volunteer Firemen's Association and during his leisure spent much time at the Fire Department headquarters on Second Street. He was highly regarded by the firemen, three of his sons being members of the department.
Surviving are his widow, Martha, a daughter Mrs Elsbeth Cleveland of Riverhead; four sons Lawrence C, Eugene E and Harold J Schaefer all of Riverhead and Theodore A Schaefer of Southampton, and a brother Charles Schaefer. Three of Mr Schaefer's sons served with the Armed Forces in World War II.
Funeral services will be held in the First Congregational Church this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev James Fraser, the pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Riverhead cemetery.
