Mary Ann BEVAN (72) was born Nov. 4, 1831 in Defynock, Brecon, Wales the daughter of Daniel Bevan and Mary Ann Price (1793-1879). At the age of 23yrs. she married on May 7, 1855 in Twyn-yr-odyn Brecon, Glamorgan (county), Wales, Henry NICHOLAS, son of John Nicholas and Rachel Collins.

Henry was an ironstone miner and his occupation proved to be dangerous, so they decided to emigrate to America in 1869 when Mary Ann was 38 yrs old. Henry's two brothers had already settled. When they arrived at Ellis Island, her feather-tick mattress was thrown overboard onto the dock. Someone tried to steal it, but she stood her ground and won the tug of war!

Henry became a farmer. At first they settled in Lake County, IL, but then came to Mitchell county, Iowa.

Mary and Henry had 6 children all of whom were born in Wales, except for the youngest Rachel, who was born in Lake County, IL near Libertyville, IL.

Mary Nicholas died surrounded by her family on Jan. 10, 1910 in Brownville, Iowa.

The newspaper reported:
" In the death of Mrs. Henry Nicholas not only the home, but also the church and community have sustained a real loss. A faithful wife and mother, a kind friend, an earnest Christian, Thus she lived and tho' dead she yet speaketh. Converted in the days of girlhood, through the years of a long life time sister Nicholas sought to know the Master's will and to embody in her life His teachings.
Deceased whose maiden name was Mary Bevan, was born in Breconshire, Wales, Nov. 4, 1831. On May 7, 1855 she married to Henry Nicholas, with whom she moved to Lake County, Illinois in 1869 and then to Mitchell county, Iowa in 1878. Six of the seven children born to this union together with her husband stood by her bedside whereon Sunday, January 10th, she peacefully fell asleep.
The funeral services were held at the David Free Baptist church of which deceased was a member. The remains were interred in the Beaver Creek cemetery in Brownville, Iowa."
