"RODE TO HIS DEATH.

From the TIMES-ECHO

Last Saturday, just about dark the city was aroused from the peace and quiet that usually falls over it at this time of the day, by the announcement that a man had been murdered and robbed near the depo, and that his body had been placed on the track by the murderer so that the ten oclock train might, in passing over it, destroy all evidence of murder.

A large crowd of people accompanied the officers to the scene. Arriving there search and minute examination disclosed the fact that there was abundant room to doubt that the man had been murdered. A terrible gash running entirely across his forehead laid bare his skull, another gash of equal depth extended from his mouth to the point of his chin, and his neck was broken. Besides this, his horse was found near by with its face, nose and limbs bruised and bleeding.

Caviness had been in the city all day and was under the influence of whisky more or less all day, the day before so we are told, he drew $225 out of the Citizens bank, and still had the major part of this money when he came to town on Saturday morning , and all of this money, except $100 dollars which he had left with A.N. Matthews( attorney or aus ? cant quite read this word in the copy ) the amount that an ordinary man would spend while on a day's spree, was suppose to be in his possession when he left town .

The body was carried to Wadsworth's undertaking establishment, and the inquest began at 12 o'clock they adjourned until 9 o'clock Sunday morning, when the jurymen went and overlooked the surroundings where the man was killed. Below is the jurys verdict.

We the jury find that J.M.Caviness came to his death by having been thrown from his horse on the trestle on the railroad just below the depot.

The Jury searched the pockets of the deceased and found $11.08 in silver, and he had caused the police some trouble before Saturday, and about dark policeman Willis tried to arrest both him and Tom Flannery in front of the Red Front Barn on Main street, but Caviness jumped on his horse while Mr.Willis was bundling Flannery and sped down the street rapidly on his horse could go. There is no doubt that he continued the pace until he ran into the trestle, the supposition being that he went on to the railroad tract where the lamp stands just out side the depot yard fence. This is the third victim of whisky that has gone to his death down that road in less than a year."
