Leroy was a Virginia Unionist, imprisoned in Richmond when he died. He was buried on 17 April 1862 just outside of Shockoe Hill Cemetery, in a plot eventually containing the remains off more than 600 Union POWs, as well as at least a dozen Unionist civilians who each were identified mistakenly in Cemetery records as a "Federal soldier". The remains all were moved in 1866-67 to Richmond National Cemetery, where they rest today under "Unknown" markers.

A commemorative marker honoring the POWs was placed at Shockoe Hill Cemetery in 2002 by the Military Order of the Loyal Legion (MOLLUS). His name appears as "Leroy Dison", as it was recorded at the time of first burial. See the Cenotaph here
