John was a Unionist civilian imprisoned in Richmond during the Civil War. He was buried on 11 December 1861 just east of Richmond's Shockoe Hill Cemetery in the same area as Union POWs had been buried, and his burial register entry mistakenly stated he was a "federal soldier."

The remains of all those buried in that area were disinterred in 1866-67, and moved to Richmond National Cemetery as Unknowns. A commemorative marker honoring the POWs and Unionists was placed in 2002 by the Military Order of the Loyal Legion (MOLLUS). For more on the POWs and the marker, see soldiersofshockoehill.
