He was held as a prisoner of war in Richmond, and was buried on 19 June 1862 just outside of Shockoe Hill Cemetery, in a plot holding hundreds of other POWs and Unionist civilians. All of the remains were moved to Richmond National Cemetery in 1866-67, where they rest today under "Unknown" markers.

His full name, unit and other personal information about him has not yet been found. A commemorative marker bearing his name, as it was recorded at the time of his initial burial, was placed at Shockoe Hill Cemetery in 2002 by the Military Order of the Loyal Legion (MOLLUS).
