Solomon Barton

Solomon Barton was born near Kent, England, March 30, 1831, and died at his home in Washington County, Neb., Sunday, Feb. 21st. 1915, aged 83 years, 10 months and 21 days.

He came to America in 1850 and settled in Elgin, Illinois, moving from there to Edge wood, Illinois in I860, where he was married, Jan. 19th, 1885, to Miss Eliza Wilson.

To this union were born ten children, five girls and five boys, nine of whom are still living. The living sons are William, Solomon, Elmer and Lester. The daughters are Mrs. Lydia Pixley, Mrs. Frances Newkirk, Miss Anna Barton, Mrs. Esther Nelson, all of whom reside in this county, except Mrs. Pixley, whose home is in Brown County, this state.

Mr. Barton, with his wife and seven children, came overland, from Edgewood, Illinois to Nebraska and settled in Washington County, Sept. 17th, 1877, and has lived in the same township ever since, spending over thirty-three years in the house where he died.

In his death the community loses another of the old and much esteemed pioneers, of whom only a few remain.

Mr. and Mrs. Barton celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage last month, with all of the children and most of the grandchildren present, all of whom, together with the good wife, are left to mourn. Of the immediate family of the deceased, only one sister remains, now residing in England. The only living relative in this country is a niece, Mrs. Adelaide Wilson, of Edgewood, Illinois

The sympathy of many friends is extended to the widow and children in their great loss.

Funeral services were conducted from the M. E. church Wednesday, February 24th with Rev. J. W. Lewis officiating.
