A daughter of John Smyth and Martha McQuaid, she came to America with her parents in 1832. She married Laffer S. Caples of Tuscarawas Co., on July 16, 1845 and for many years they lived in Rush twp., Tuscarawas Co. She died at her home on N. Main St., Uhrichsville, of heart failure. She was the mother of eight children - six of whom survived her. (Eliza's brother, William, lived at Uhrichsville as well.)
