A son of Robert Green Caples and Nancy Ann Davis, he taught school in Indiana and Illinois as well as in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. In 1864, he organized Company F, 161st Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served as Captain in the Army of the Potomac. He married Eliza Ellen Smyth on July 16, 1845, and was the father of eight children - six of whom survived him. He was a farmer and stock raiser and served as Justice of the Peace in Mill twp. For ten years he was a local preacher n the Methodist Church.
