Oldest Resident in This Section Dies at Age of 99
Torger O. Midboe, Sr., without a doubt the oldest resident of this community and pioneer in Grand Forks County, passed away last Saturday. He was more than 99½ years old having been born in Telemark, Norway on February 22, 1829. He came to America in 1861 and first settled in Wisconsin where he remained for three years. He then moved to Iowa where he lived for 14 years, coming to North Dakota in 1878. He homesteaded in Grand Forks County in 1878 and here he made his home for the remainder of his life.
Mr. Midboe was united in marriage to Miss Sigrid Utabjaa on September 16, 1850. To this union seven children were born, four of whom are now living. They are Olaf [Ole], Even, Ole and Aslag Midboe, all of Hatton. Those preceded him in death were Mrs. Osten [Hage] Pladson, Mrs. Miller [Anne Sophia] Trilhus and Carl Midboe. His wife died Jan. 26, 1896. He leaves, besides his four sons, seventeen grandchildren, fifty great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Midboe, in spite of his advanced age, enjoyed very good health, was always very active. Only during the last three weeks before his death was he confined to his bed.
Funeral services are being held from Goose River Church next Sunday morning at 10 o’clock. Rev. A.J. Eikeland will officiate. – Hatton Free Press, Sept. 6, 1928
