Thomas was the son of William and Prudence (Newberry) Allen. He married Anna Hazelwood on December 23, 1849 in Grant county, Wisconsin. To this union eleven children were born: Thomas, Mary, Charles, Caroline, Sophia, Nelson, Homer, James, Jessie, Julius (Joe), and Irene.
