Nephew of former owners of Oak Alley Plantation, Andrew and Josephine Stewart. He was the son of Josephine's sister, Julia Armstrong Mayhew Kaufmann, from her first marriage. Descended from Thomas Mayhew, who governed over Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in 1641. He managed the plantation after his aunt died and until his death. His son now manages it.
