James Gordon Bryson, physician and author, the son of Joseph Goodson and Elizabeth (Anderson) Bryson, was born on October 6, 1884, in Liberty Hill, Williamson County, Texas.

He graduated from the University of Texas medical school in Galveston in 1910 and married Lily Clara Shuddemagen at Christmas of that year; they had six children. Bryson established his medical practice in Pearsall and soon moved to Bastrop; he received training in surgery in Austin in
1918 but after a brief stay in Marlin returned to Bastrop.

During his thirty-seven-year career he became one of the best-known general practitioners in Central Texas.
