My Uncle never used or liked his first name, always went by Lee. He was 64 when he died, hating doctors and hospitals or making a big deal out of things, his flu turned into pneumonia, where he died in the hospital. He looked just like Clark Gable, throughout most his life. Good-looking, intelligent, and hard-working, a good provider for his family. He left behind three daughters, Linda (Whitacre) Meurer of Portland, Oregon, Jackie (Whitacre) Bartles of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Rita (Whitacre) Morrical of Fort
Wayne, Indiana. His longtime wife and companion Barbara. He grew up on a rural family farm in Adams County, Indiana, near Geneva. The youngest of 5 siblings. He had one brother and three sisters. The oldest was Patrice Whitacre, born April 24th, 1917. She died in October of 1941 at the age of 24, killed with her longtime fiance' on a motorcycle, hit by a drunk driver. The second oldest sibling was Devon Whitacre, of Salem, Indiana. The two only brothers were very close. Devon was born on August 23rd, 1918. So Lee died on his birthday. Devon died on December 31st, of 1993, he was 75, died in a nursing home, complications of Ahlzeimers disease, a retired dairy farmer. The third was my mother, Roma (Whitacre) Clayman from Illinois. She was born July 30th, 1921, and died on her 81st Birthday on July 30th, 2002, the last surviving Whitacre. She died in a long-term care hospital, complications from Parkinsons Disease and a Stroke. The 4th was Wanda (Whitacre) Shauver of Portland, Indiana. She was born on August 4th, 1926 and died at the age of 58, on December 3rd, 1986, of Colon Cancer. Lee's parents were: Leah (Foster) Whitacre of Indiana and David Nathaniel Whitacre of Ohio. Leah Whitacre died at the age of 41 on July 25th, 1936. From a car accident and crushed skull, hit by a drunk driver. She had run the family farm, her husband totally dependent on her, was sickly, going blind, deaf, and disoriented. Lee was 9 years old at the time his mother died. The oldest, Patrice, took over the farm and care of their father, till her untimely death at an early age. Then Devon took over, they had to put their father in a Sanitarium, Richmond State Hospital, for constant care and supervision, his condition worsening. He died on March 10th, 1943, at the age of 54. He had Syphillis. Devon sold the family farm to an Amish Family and bought his own farm nearby. Lee opened up his own business, called "Dairy Sweet." He retired in 1988, three years before he died. He was a pall bearer at my dad's funeral a year in a half before he died. He also had worked as a Contractor. And currently worked at a Target Store, though raised a Lutheran, became a Catholic, was a member of St. Jude's Church and the Knights of Columbus. Also a World War II. Veteran. Always full of life and fun, loved to joke. Very family-oriented.
