Mary E. (Mead) Birmingham Byrd


Mary E. Byrd passed away July 3, 2013 in Tucson, AZ at age 94. She was born December 21, 1918 to Roy and Myrtle Mead.


A longtime Tulsan, she attended Monte Cassino School, Smith College, University of Tulsa, and University of Oklahoma, where she received her Master of Library Science degree. She served as a Librarian at Tulsa University from 1972-1982, when she married Joe Byrd III, and moved to Lufkin. She was a member of the Junior League in Tulsa, Pittsburgh, PA and Lufkin.


She is preceded in death by her husbands, Joseph P. Byrd III and Frank W. Birmingham; brother, Roy Mead, Jr. and sister-in-law, Mary Mead.


She is survived by her children, Michael Birmingham (Mary Ann), Mary Birmingham (Carole Deatherage), Peter Birmingham; granddaughters, Catherine Birmingham, Sara Birmingham, and the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the Byrd family.


Mary is described as fun, elegant, kind and generous, as good a combination as one can get.


Funeral services will be held in the Henderson Chapel at First United Methodist Church in Lufkin.


She will be laid to rest in Tulsa, OK at the Rose Hill Mausoleum.
