Martha Finlay was born in Barrow in Furness, England in 1878 to Sarah McCormick (born in Ireland) and Joseph Wilson Finlay a Shipyard Labourer(Ireland).

On June 13, 1899 She married Robert Hawthorn Wylie, son of John Wylie and Elizabeth Esther McWhirr. Martha's father was listed as John Wilson Finlay, plater's helper. However, from her birth certificate and census information, we know that his name was actually Joseph Wilson Finlay.

In England Martha and Robert had children John, Sarah, Martha, Isabella and Ethel.

The couple decided to make a better life for themselves in Canada. Robert went first to find work and a place to live.

Martha and the children stayed behind. Their daughter Sarah was sick with tuberculosis and they knew she would not be allowed to enter Canada. Sarah died from her illness in 1909.

Martha and her children travelled to Canada in 1910 aboard the ship called the Empress of Ireland. Their port of arrival was St. John, New Brunswick on December 23, 1910.

Prior to coming to Canada Robert was a soldier in the Boer war.

Robert and Martha had two children after their arrival in Canada, Robert and Lillian. Son Robert died at 2 years old in 1912.
