Services for Virgie Griffin, 100, of Lufkin, will be held at Mt. Beulah Baptist Church in Lufkin. Interment will follow at St. Luke Cemetery in San Augustine County.

Virgie Mathews Griffin was born September 1, 1912 in San Augustine County to the late Frank and Ella Mathews. At an early age the family move to Lufkin, Texas and joined Goodwill Baptist Church. She later married and moved to California for a number of years. On returning to Lufkin, Texas, she joined the Mt. Beulah Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. N.C. Simmons.

While at Mt. Beulah Baptist Church, Sis. Griffin served in many capacities: Choir president, member of the Senior Mission, chairperson of the Food Committee, but her most compassionate job was taking care of the flowers around the church. She would get up early in the morning and come back late in the evening to make sure the flower bed got watered. She was a Foster grandparent at the Lufkin State School for a number of years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Frank & Ella Mathews, sisters; Effie Davis, Anne Mae Brown and Inez Mathews, brothers; Elcie, Drayton, Henry, Willie and Royce Mathews.

Sis Griffin is survived by her nephews: A.B. Davis of San Francisco, California, Frank Lloyd Mathews of Dallas, Texas, Donald Ray and Wilbert Brown of Nacogdoches, Texas. Nieces: Ellarie Miller of Lufkin, Texas, Norma jean and Wilamena Brown of Nacogdoches, Texas. And a host of friends and relatives
