Elmer Gillman Johnson was born January 18, 1933 in Rushford, MN to Andrew and Gertrude (Pederson) Johnson. He attended school in Rutherford and at age 16 came to North Dakota where he began working for area farmers in the Bucyrus and Reeder areas. On January 20, 1953, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He was discharged on November 2, 1954 and returned to North Dakota where he began working near New England on the Eddy Rustan farm.
Elmer was united in marriage to Arlyce Schaible on December 20, 1959 in Mott. They lived on the Lloyd Erickson place in Hettinger County. In 1963, Elmer and Arlyce moved into Mott and Elmer started working for Hettinger County on the road construction crew. He retired in 1998, but continued to work parttime during the summer months for a few years.

He enjoyed tinkering in the garage and redoing old cars, building with wood, going for a cup of coffee with friends, and listening to some old HeeHaw music. Most of all, he cherished the times spent with his family; his grandchildren were his pride and joy.

Surviving family members include his wife, Arlyce, Mott, ND; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Johnson, St. Cloud, MN; David Johnson, and Corey and Becky Johnson, all of Mott, ND; three grandchildren, Brandon, Maddison, and Sophie; one daughter, Gayla Johnson, Sunnyvale, CA; one brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Ruth Johnson, in California; and special friend, "Trooper".
He was preceded in death by his parents, and 4 sisters, Gladine, Ruth, Rosella, and Helen.

Visitation will be 1:00 to 7:00pm on Friday at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Mott.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
