ST. IGNATIUS - Peter Paul Schaan, 85, a longtime, prominent Mission Valley resident, passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, surrounded by his family.

Peter was born to Joseph and Catherine (Miller) Schaan, the son of Volga-German immigrants, on July 12, 1917, in Rugby, N.D. Raised and educated in North Dakota, he started hopping the rails at 18, ending up in Montana at age 21. He worked as a ranch hand in the Missoula and surrounding areas and became a cattle buyer and auctioneer.

Peter married Frances Warner on April 14, 1942, in Missoula before starting his service in the U.S. Army during World War II in October. Upon his return he and his wife made their home in Missoula and Peter resumed his cattle buying and auctioneering business. A pioneer in Montana's rapidly growing cattle business during the 1940s and 1950s, Peter traveled extensively, helping to set up the auction grounds in Baker and Hermiston, Ore., as well as Spokane, Kalispell and Missoula.

Peter traveled well into the 1980s on cattle-buying ventures and had an extensive following at livestock auctions, where he had been an auctioneer for many years in Kalispell and Missoula.

Peter and Frances were blessed with a son and daughter in 1961. In 1972 they bought a ranch in the Moiese Valley and raised their children there. In the 1980s, they sold their ranch and moved to the St. Ignatius area.
