Ambrose J. Scherping, age 89, of Freeport, died peacefully on Thursday, July 5, 2007 at Das Goldene Wohnheim in New Munich, Minnesota.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 A.M. Monday, July 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 P.M. Sunday and from 10 to 11 A.M. Monday at the church in Freeport. Goldenaires Senior Citizens will pray at 4:30 P.M. followed by parish prayers at 5 P.M. and St. Joseph's Men's Society at 8 P.M. Sunday evening.
Ambrose Scherping was born May 14, 1918 in Oak Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to John and Katherine (Verkinnes) Scherping. On May 15, 1940 he married Elizabeth "Alice" Ballmann at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. The couple farmed all their lives near Freeport. In 1978 they retired and moved to Freeport. Ambrose continued farming helping his son, Deacon Rick on the farm. He enjoyed playing cards and bowling. Ambrose was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and St. Joseph's Men's Society.
Survivors include his children, Mary Ann Shay and her husband, Art of Elk River, Arlene Viere and her husband, Kenneth of Cold Spring, Donald Scherping and his wife, Lynn of Freeport, Dolores Schwieters and her husband, Dave of Battle Lake, and Deacon Rick Scherping and his wife, June of Freeport; 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; and sister, Gertrude Forster of Albany.
Ambrose was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elizabeth Scherping on November 8, 1984; brothers, Gerhard, Leonard, Gothard, and Edward Scherping; sisters, Helen Poxleitner, Bernadine Hollenkamp, and Pauline Moonen.
Serving as casket bearers will be Travis and Jeremy Scherping, Jeff Shay, Jason Schwieters, Todd and Tate Viere. Serving as cross bearer will be Jade Viere and scripture bearer will be Dawn Christensen. Mass servers will be Victor and Rodolfo Scherping. Gift bearers will be Adam Schwieters, Jenny and Mishel Scherping. Readers will be Carmen Block and Rachael Zink. Petitions will be read by Kim Volk and Sheila Connell. Honorary bearers will be Elmer Elfering, Ed Job, Odillo Hoppe, Gary Pierskalla, Paul Pierskalla, Art Van Heel, Bill Welle, and the St. Joseph's Men's Society.
