Mrs. Summersett died Sunday, August 29, 2010. Born November 27, 1927 in Orangeburg, she was the eldest child of the late William and Sadie Newton. After graduation from Orangeburg High School, she attended Furman University and the University of South Carolina, majoring in Business. Betty Rose was the only female in an accounting class when she met her future husband, Ben K. Summersett Jr. They wed at her home December 27, 1947 and they remained united for 52 years. Betty Rose and Ben owned and operated Laurel Hill Inn and Rib Room and she managed the Summersett Building on Marion Street. She was a 50-year member of Alpha Zeta Sorority and was the hostess for Columbia Country Club.
She is survived by her son, Ben K. Summersett III (Valerie) of Westminister, CO; a daughter, Linda S. Brown (Danny) of Columbia; brothers, William B. Newton Jr. of Charleston, Bob Newton and Jack Newton, both of Orangeburg. She was a devoted grandmother to four grandchildren, Larry Dennis Jr., Gregory Dennis, Emily Rose Summersett and Delon Summersett and great-grandmother to Bella Dennis, Ingrid Dennis and Diego Dennis. She was predeceased by her husband, Ben K. Summersett Jr.
