James was a son of William Marcellus "Bill" Adams and Katie Sarah Ipock per his death certificate. He was married to Evelyn Lloyd and the only known children at this time are the two mentioned in 1940 census,Geraldine Adams and James C Adams Jr.

Adams Jr, during the research on James a DC was located for a Baby Boy Adams born on Dec 1, 1946, and died on Dec 2, 1946, it named parents as James C. Adams and Evelyn Lloyd, it states he was buried in Adams Cemetery in Pitt County. Cemetery Census was referred to find this infant and no mention of him was named, nor was he named in Book One or Book Two of the Cemetery Index of Pitt County. It's possible this child was given a proper name but even using the find option for the year 1946 did not bring up a name. Below are details from that death certificate. It's possible he is buried in Adams-Boyd Cemetery where grandmother Kattie Adams is buried, he is NOT named on that survey, however.
