Hiram Sackett, 72 years old, died suddenly Dec 7, 1909 in Barn C at Briarcliff Farms. At about that hour he went to the barn and commenced feeding the cows. In a few minutes one of helpers found him lying against the stanchion close to the head of one of the cows. Life was extinct, and he must have expired instantly, as it was a very few moments before that the men saw him at work. They heard no sound or cry from him, and at first supposed he has simply fallen. Physicians who examined the body said he had died of heart disease. For the past thirty years, Mr Sackett and his brother, Smith Sackett, owned and cultivated two farms. One was known as the Stegar farm at the south end of Halcyon Lake, the other the Walter Husted farm, most of latter being in the town of Stanford. Both farms were sold to Walter Law and became part of the Briarcliff purchase… Mr Sackett married Mary Allen of Syanford about the close of the civil war. She died two years later. He is survived by a brother, Smith Sackett, a sister, Emily Knickerbocker of Pleasant Valley, and a daughter, Mary. At the beginning of the civil war he enlisted in the 20th Reg, NYSVI, and served until the close of the war. Mr Sackett was a good citizen, and highly esteemed. He had been assessor for the town of Stanford, and had also served as superintendent of highways, and other offices. He was a member of the Stanford Grange, Patrons of Husbandry. Interment was at Stanfordville.
