Ray Harris Patrick was born on October 12, 1892 in Knox County, Indiana; he was the son of Charles and Anna (Fletcher) Patrick. The family moved to St. Joseph County in 1899.

He was an employee of the Studebaker Company, South Bend, Indiana.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 26, 1918 at South Bend and was sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Illinois. After training he was transferred to Fortress Monroe, Virginia and was stationed on the USS Alabama. He drowned in the York River on September 20, 1918. His body was recovered and returned home to South Bend for burial.
