Katherine (Kittie) Florence Willard (Kirk) was born in Pierre, SD on June 11, 1890, seven months after South Dakota became a state. Her family had moved to the Dakota Territory from Pennsylvania in 1885 having been encouraged by the promise of opportunity out west by two of her mother‘s uncles who had invested in land and business out there. After an assortment of adventures, misadventures and financial reverses, the Willard family returned to Pennsylvania in 1895.

She graduated from Bellefonte High School in 1908 and taught school in Pennsylvania for several years. On May 26, 1915, she was married to Ralph Emerson Kirk. They lived in Pennsylvania where he was a mining engineer. During WWI they lived briefly at Camp Merritt, NJ, where his Army Company had guard duty. In 1936 they moved to Birmingham, AL, where her husband had accepted a job.

They traveled extensively in Canada and the United States, including a trip in 1955 to SD where she traced her family's path.

She lived in Birmingham until her death in 1965.

She and her husband Ralph had three daughters (Katherine, Elisabeth, and Elinor) and ten grandchildren.
