H. K. W. (Harris K. W.) Childress was born in Chulahoma, Mississippi 'Hill Country' and was married twice, first to Martha Eliza Bell (1853 - 1887) the daughter of Elijah H. Bell and Martha E. Miles, and second to Mary Julia Gay. He enlisted with Mississippi 19 Reg't Co. I 25 May 1861 who listed his name as Harrison, likely a clerical error. He was wounded at the Battle of Gaines Mill and subsequently lost his left arm to amputation, after which he continued his military service as a hospital orderly. After the war he and his family moved to Douglas GA where despite his disability he became a farmer. After the death of his first wife, he moved to Atlanta GA, remarried, and created the 'Veterans Broom Works' a family business which manufactured and sold brooms. He demonstrated great strength and character throughout his life which continues to be a positive influence on his descendants.

Note, while everyone seems to agree the W. of his name is for Wylie, some of the descendants believe the K. is for King (Cassels), and others have said Kendricks (A.W.C. Jr) or Kenlock (G.F.C.). He usually just used H. or Harris K. W. but military records have him as Harrison.
He and his wife Martha Eliza Bell were the parents of eight children, four were born in Chulahoma:

Ella Bell Childress Edwards born 1874
Albert Wylie Childress Sr born 1876
Martha Willie Childress Cassells born 1877
Emma Alexandria Childress Cloud born 1879

and four were born in Georgia:

Walter Hamilton Childress born 1881
Mecca Irene Childress Norrell born 1881
Arthur Miles Childress born 1884
Thomas Warren Childress born 1886

Inscription

reads Pvt 'Co I 2 Regt GA Inf CSA' but that is incorrect, he did collect his pension in GA but records show he served with 19 Regt Co I Mississippi CSA, as he had moved with his family to GA after the war.
