Mary was born in the village of Bresewitz (near the Baltic) and baptized in the Lutheran Church in Friedland, Mecklenburg-Strelitz. She was the daughter of August Biederstadt and Sophia Maria Spatholt. She emigrated out of Hamburg with her parents and younger brother on the Ship Main and landed in New York on May 26, 1858. On May 19, 1867, she was confirmed in St. Peter Lutheran Church, Florida. She and Fred Oberhaus married on April 19, 1872, in St. Peter; they moved to Napoleon where they lived out their lives as members of St. Paul Lutheran Church. They had 11 children.
