Obituary of Jos. A. Capps and Data on his Life


Joseph Andrew Capps was born in Edmonson co., Kentucky, Oct. 9th, 1855, departed this life March 7th,1923 at the home of his daughter Ava Capps in Creston.


In 1863 he with his parents moved to Warren Co., Ill., residing there until 1871, when they came to Union County, Iowa, locating on a farm near Kent.


He was the youngest of a family of twelve children all having preceeded him in death except one brother Asa Capps of Kent, Iowa.


He was married to Miss Lona Munyon December 25th, 1881. To this union was born four children, two sons and two daughters.


The sons Floyd age 1 1/2 years and George aged 6 months died in the year 1885 within one week of each other.


His wife preceded him in death twenty-five eyars ago.


Since that time he has resided in Kent. In the fall of 1922 he went to Casper, Wyo. to visit the home of his daughter, returining the way of Phillips Co., Kansas, stopping there for a short time to visit relatives.


He was taken sick so it was neccessary for his daughter Ava in Creston, IA to go down and bring him to her home, where he took suddenly worse and only lived a few days.


Mr. Capps leaves to mourn his death two daughters. Mrs. Pearl Brittain of Casper, Wyoming, and Miss Ava Capps of Creston, Iowa, one brother Asa Capps of Kent, Iowa, and three grandchildren, a host of relatives and friends.


He is an upright man, a good citizen, loyal to his friends and a splendid neighbor, never complaining, but always cheerful with a kind word to all.


Having living in this vicinity for more than fifty years. He was well known and it can be said truthfully that to know him was to be his friend.


The funeral services were held at the M.E. church at Kent, conducted by Rev. M. Hulbert.


A host of relatives and friends followed the remains to its last resting place beside that of his wife and babies at the Morgan Cemetery.
