John Stearns was the 3rd child of eleven born to John and Lucy Merrill Stearns. He had 6 sisters and 4 brothers...Mary (Polly), Sarah (Sally), Abijah (died young), Fanny, Thomas, Betsy (died in infancy), James, Beulah, Daniel, and Betsy (died at one and a half). He married Nancy Esleek and at some point in their marriage moved from Massachusetts to a small community in New York, Castleton-on-Hudson where he died on 29 August 1865 and was laid to rest in Mountain View Cemetery.
