About 8:30 o'clock last night while Mrs. Joseph Arden, an old lady nearly 79 years of age, was sitting in her night clothes near a stove at her home near the Hall road, her clothing in some manner came in contact with the stove and took fire, burning her about the limbs and breast in a terrible manner At the time of the accident there was no one in the house but the husband of the unfortunate woman, who is 81 years old and very feeble. He had retired but a few moments before aroused by the cries of his wife for help. Jumping out of bed and seeing his wifes night clothing in flames he picked up a pail of water and extinguished the flames. It is impossible to know exactly how the accident occurred. Mrs Arden is the mother of James Arden of the Eighth ward and was highly respected by her acquaintances and friends. It is thought she cannot recover.

MRS. ARDEN'S DEATH
A Long Life in Oswego Closed by an Accident-Seventy Five
Years a Resident

Last night we noted a sad accident to Mrs. Clarissa Arden, wife of Joseph Arden, who lives on East Tenth. As feared the old lady did not rally and at 12:15 last night, after intense suffering she expired. It appears that she was sitting close to a little parlour stove in which there was a hot fire and in rising her clothing came in contact with it and she was badly burned before her husband who is 82 years of age could extinguish the flames. The attending physicians say, however, that it was the shock and extreme age which contributed to her death.

Mr. and Mrs. Arden were two of the oldest inhabitants of Oswego. Mrs. Arden had lived here from her birth 75 years ago. Her name was Clarissa Sutton and she was born in a house which stood by the river in the rear of the city bank. Her father, Joseph Sutton, had been a resident several years before that. Mr. Arden was born in 1804 and came to this city in 1829 and in November following married Clarissa Sutton, who was at that time employed in the family of David Harmon. From that time to this Mr. and Mrs. Arden have resided continuously in the city. They had a family of eight sons and three daughters, nine of whom are still living. Only three, Moses, and James, and Mrs. James Gill remain in Oswego.

The funeral of Mrs. Arden takes place Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
