Richard Paul Abbott was a Fireman Second Class in the United States Naval Reserve, assigned to the Destroyer USS Buck (DD-420).

Richard was KIA/MIA when the USS Buck patrolling the coast was hit by a Torpedo from the German Submarine U-616, when sinking there was a massive explosion killed and wounded sailors in the Tyrrhenian Sea on, 9 October 1943 he is honored with a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal.
